Review -The first half of the evening is a facilitated writing exercise, lasting about 30 minutes. We shared our work if we wanted to and then broke for a drink downstairs. The second half was people sharing their poems.

The time I went, one of the members – a keen scarf collector – brought in various scarves and talked a bit about them. I wrote prose rather than verse and the group were easygoing about this. I was inspired and started a story about a flamenco dancer.

Expect a down-to-earth, lively group of prolific poets. The commentary is frank and specific, with useful suggestions for trimming chunky lines. (Reviewer: Kath Burke)

  2. Hi Justwrite
I run a creative writing group at Varndean College, Brighton. My January creative writing course at Varndean now starts on Thursday 23rd January, (not the 16th as it says in the Varndean booklet.) So that gives people another week to sign up. There’s still places so If anyone’s interested, the amended blurb is below.

A lively forum for both new and experienced writers of prose fiction – novels, short stories, children’s fiction – looking at characterisation, setting, dialogue, structure, plot, viewpoint etc. To enable students to write with greater confidence, and become clearer about what they want to write and how to write it. Working on tutor-set exercises, students will be encouraged to give each other positive and constructive feedback. Run by a published, critically acclaimed, author.

  9. Hi all!

    Come join Collective Writing
5 Thursdays starting 28/01/2016 7-9pm at Evolution Arts, Brighton

A playful series of workshops designed to explore the freedom and enthusiasm that collective writing can generate. Rather than instructing creativity to arise, we will encourage it to appear through improvisation exercises and inventive word play. Words will be flung around the room (quite literally) and laughter will take precedence over end product. We will examine creative inspirations from poetry, theatre, literature and art and each workshop will culminate in a shared writing journey conjured by what we have explored in the session. This workshop is suitable for beginners, and those more experienced, from any of the arts that would like to embark on a journey of writing discovery

  10. Hi everyone,

I teach interpretative methods of reading and writing, the kind practised in literary critique. I can help you to explore, experiment and be playful with text. To form and elaborate ideas from your personal interests. To read and write expressly for pleasure.

Whether you wish to develop the skills to write essays, poems, anything you like, I can be of assistance.

Lessons are £20 for an hour and are held at my home.

    Email me at:

  11. Hi, please do include the Sussex Playwrights in your listing. The group has just entered its 81st year supporting and promoting new writing for theatre and radio and now includes TV, film and online drama too. Competitions, readings and special events every year. This year’s programme of events is currently being organised. All welcome. Further details at http://www.Sussex and the Sussex Playwrights Facebook Page.
